De UEFA Europa League - voorheen bekend als de UEFA Cup en opgericht in 1971 - is de op een na grootste internationale clubcompetitie in Europa.
Teams uit heel Europa strijden om de overwinning in de competitie, doorheen een uitgebreide groepsfase en vijf knock-out-ronden. Behalve een prestigieuze trofee, levert de overwinning ook een plaats op in de groepsfase van de UEFA Champions League in het volgende seizoen. Daarnaast krijgen de winnaars van de Europa League de kans om het op te nemen tegen de houder van de UEFA Champions League in de jaarlijkse UEFA Super Cupwedstrijd.
De Europa League volgt het klassieke dubbele competitieformaat, waarbij elk team twee keer tegen elk ander team in hun groep speelt - zowel thuis als uit - voor een totaal van zes speeldagen. De groepswinnaars en de nummers twee gaan door naar de knock-out fase en worden vergezeld door acht teams die derde werden in de groepsfase van de Champions League.
Wedstrijden in dit toernooi worden vaak op donderdag gespeeld om overlappingen met Champions League-wedstrijden te voorkomen. Hoewel de media-aandacht vaak uitgaat naar de Champions League, blijft de Europa League populair. Europese topclubs zoals Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Atletico Madrid, Dortmund en Ajax hebben allemaal deelgenomen aan de UEL, waarbij sommige van deze clubs zelfs dit prestigieuze Europese toernooi hebben gewonnen.
Net zoals in de UEFA Champions League komt het team met de meest gewonnen titels in dit toernooi ook uit Spanje: Sevilla. Dit team vestigde een record door de competitie drie opeenvolgende jaren - in 2014, 2015 en 2016 - te winnen.
Memorabele namen uit het prachtige spel hebben geschitterd in de Europa League en hebben de titel op hun naam geschreven. Jupp Heynckes, Dennis Bergkamp, Radamel Falcao, Antoine Griezmann en Eden Hazard hebben allemaal de eer gehad om de trofee omhoog te houden. Het is niet verrassend dat de UEL, vanwege het overvloed aan getalenteerde spelers en teams die elk seizoen deelnemen, een van de meest competitieve clubcompetities in het wereldvoetbal is. Als gevolg hiervan zijn televisie-uitzendingen en streamingopties wereldwijd ruimschoots beschikbaar, aangezien de uitzendrechten vaak gebundeld worden met de zeer populaire Champions League-rechten.
