About

Azteca Uno History, Coverage, Features

Azteca Uno is a privately funded television channel from Mexico, owned and operated by Televisión Azteca. The channel was launched as part of the Mexican free-to-air network in 1968, when it was known as Imevisión. That changed in 1993, when owner Ricardo Salinas Pliego won an auction to make the channel private along with its sister network, Azteca 7. Azteca 7 was officially launched under the name Mi Tele in October 1993, and it would later be rebranded to Azteca Trece in 1998, a name it kept until 2017 before being named Azteca Uno. This last rebranding had to do with the channel number assigned by the Mexican Institute of Telecommunications (IFT), as Azteca 13 was handed the No.1 spot in the grid.

Over the years, Azteca Uno has been known as a general interest channel. News, gossip shows, telenovelas, talk shows, movies, and sports have been part of the channel’s general programming.

Speaking about sports, Azteca Uno was frequently used to air all major sports events, such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, tournaments featuring the Mexican Football Team, Liga MX matches, NBA games, NFL matches, and more. Over the years, Azteca Uno’s programming has focused on general entertainment, leaving sports to be aired by Azteca 7. Even so, the channel has been frequently used as an overflow channel to Azteca 7 when major sports events are taking place and two live games take place at the same time.

Azteca Uno started airing its content in Standard Definition, but Mexican legislation urged all channels to switch to a High Definition format in 2012. Hence, Azteca Uno primarily airs its content in HD across the country, although downscaled versions of that feed may be available in some regions.
