About M1

M1 is a Hungarian television channel owned and operated by Magyar Televízió. It is the oldest television channel in this country after its launch on May 1, 1957. Back then, the channel was known as RTV. Years later, the first rebranding of the network would come, resulting in the name MTV 1 being given to the channel in 1971. That name would last until the year 2000, when it became known as M1 for only two years, which would bring another rebranding, this time to mtv from 2002 to 2005. The last rebranding experienced by the channel would come in 2005, when it became known as M1.

Over the years, M1 had been known as a general interest channel, with news, sports, magazine shows, TV series, game shows, talk shows, and more being available on the channel’s grid. Nevertheless, the channel changed its approach on March 1, 2015, becoming a 24-hour news service. Most of the content in this channel is aired in Hungarian, but other languages such as English, German, Russian, and Chinese have all been made available to users in this country.

Speaking about sports, M1 has covered some of the most relevant sports events in the world via highlights, as the network has also hosted a sports-specific channel over the years that has handled all live coverage. Eventually, some of the live events that have been aired on this channel have included FIFA World Cup matches or UEFA Euro games, given that M1 is the channel with the highest reach in Hungary.

M1 was launched as a Standard Definition channel, but a High-Definition feed saw the light in 2008 and would eventually replace the old SD feed. Users who do not have access to HD technology may watch the channel via a downscaled version made available for that purpose.
