NITV History, Coverage, Features
The National Indigenous Television is a free-to-air television channel owned and operated by the Special Broadcasting Service. It was launched on July 13, 2007 on cable and satellite tv companies, but a large investment by the SBS group resulted in the channel’s launch as a free-to-air option on December 12, 2012.
As its name states, NITV focuses on relevant matters to the indigenous community in Australia. Such content might include documentaries, current affairs programs, drama shows, adult animation, sports, and children’s programming. The channel’s first shows under its new management included a two-hour event that marked the channel’s launch and a concert that was also simulcast by SBS One in primetime.
Unlike other Australian free-to-air channels, NITV is only available in Standard Definition. The channel can be accessed on Australia’s free-to-air grid and on cable and satellite pay-tv carriers across the country. Check local listings and channel numbers for availability wherever you live.
