About

SBT History, Coverage, Features

The Brazilian Television System, or SBT, is a Brazilian TV network founded on August 19, 1981. The network was established after a tender by the Brazilian Federal Government. Curiously, the first major broadcast by this channel was the ceremony in which its owners signed the concession agreement with the Brazilian government. It is frequently referred to as the second most watched television network in the country, and its headquarters are the third largest in Latin America, behind those of Mexico’s TV Azteca and Brazil’s Rede Globo.

SBT can be considered a generalist channel, with news broadcasts, entertainment shows, soap operas, sports, children’s programming, TV series, and reality shows being part of its regular programming. SBT has frequently made a profit from foreign television shows such as Mexican telenovelas from the media conglomerate Televisa, sitcoms and the widely successful TV show El Chavo del Ocho. The channel has also launched remakes of Mexican telenovelas as an option to reinvigorate their reach with that target audience.

Speaking about sports, SBT has made a name for itself with some of the content aired over the years. Sports such as football, athletics (including the summer Olympic games), tennis, Formula One racing, and wrestling have all been aired by this network.

Speaking about football, SBT has covered a wide variety of tournaments, both domestic and international. Domestically speaking, SBT has covered virtually every top football competition in Brazil. Such tournaments have included the Copa do Brasil, the Brasileirao, the Copa Uniao, the Rio-Sao Paulo tournament, and the Brazilian Football Festival, to name a few.

When it comes to international football, SBT has also aired tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the U-20 South American Football Championship, and friendly games featuring the Brazilian National Team. International club tournaments have also been aired on SBT, including the Copa Interamericana, the Copa Mercosur, the Teresa Herrera tournament, and more.

SBT’s programming was initially broadcast in Standard Definition format, but a High Definition feed was added during the earlier years of the 21st Century. Both feeds are still available for users to watch in different regions of the South American country.
