About

Seven History, Coverage, Features

The Seven Network, often times referred to as Channel Seven or simply Seven, is a commercial free-to-air channel in Australia. It is one of five free-to-air television networks in Australia. This channel is owned by Seven West Media, who launched the channel on November 4, 1963. Seven’s shows have frequently made the network one of the most watched channels in this country.

This network started as a group of independent stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane, but these stations were operating as standalone in their respective territories until 1970, when analogue cables allowed channels to share their feed between cities.

The Seven Network has made a name for itself by airing popular local shows and U.S. programs. Some of those shows include Australia’s Got Talent, Big Brother Australia, House Rules, and foreign films and shows from the U.S. that come from their deals with Disney-ABC International Television, 20th Century Studios, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros Television Distribution and more. Added to that, Seven offers news and current affairs shows and sports programming.

Speaking about sports, the Seven Network has aired some of the most watched competitions in history, such as the 2000 Summer Olympics, the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, the Australian Open Tennis, the Australian Golf Open, the AFL Premiership season, and the Australian Off Road Championship, to name a few. There have been more events that have caught the attention of Australian fans such as the Winter Olympics, the Paralympic Games, the Rugby League World Cup, and the Big Bash League.

The Seven Network is available on both SD and HD on select pay-tv carriers across the country. Check local listings and channel numbers to find out where you can watch this channel either on the Australian free-to-air TV system or on the pay-tv carrier of your choice.
