SR Fernsehen is a regional public television service owned and operated by the Saarländischer Rundfunk. It was launched on September 1, 1998 in the German region of Saarland. It is part of the ARD regional network of channels.
SR Fernsehen is considered to be a general entertainment channel, with most of their programs covering subjects such as culture, entertainment, travel, general information, and sports. Being part of the ARD network, SR Fernsehen feeds mostly from the content produced by this company, with only 30% of their programming being produced in-house.
Speaking about sports, SR Fernsehen focuses on sports events taking place in the region. Over the years, the network developed two sports shows, one that covered all sporting events, and one more that has focused specifically on football. Sports coverage has been boosted by a third television show whenever necessary.
SR Fernsehen has also contributed to ARD Das Erste by producing all content for cycling events as the Tour de France and the Deutschland Tour.
SR Fernsehen was launched as an SD Channel, but an HD feed was launched in 2016. Both feeds are still available and can be requested by each user in local pay-tv carriers. Aside from its availability in Germany, the channel has also been available in countries such as Luxembourg or France.
