About
TG4 History, Coverage, Features
TG4 is a free-to-air television channel owned and operated by Teilifís na Gaeilge. It was originally launched on October 31, 1996 as Teilifís na Gaeilge or TnaG, but the channel was later rebranded as TG4 in 1999. TG4 became the third national station to be launched in Ireland after RTÉ One and RTÉ Two. Most of the content aired by this channel is in Irish, although there is a large amount of shows in this channel that are aired in English. All shows aired in Irish have English subtitles available.
TG4 is known for its ground-breaking shows featuring film, sports, documentaries, and dramas. Added to that, TG4 has also covered current affairs with their innovative news broadcasts. Moreover, this channel has spiced up its grid by adding traditional Irish music shows and even a few successful reality shows.
Speaking about sports, TG4 has covered football, rugby, tennis, cycling, snooker, and other disciplines. Some of the top sporting events covered by this channel include the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, La Liga games, Scottish Premier League matches, UEFA Europa League games, and Irish coverage of several Wimbledon championships.
TG4 launched a High Definition feed in 2012, which is available to watch on the Irish terrestrial feed and on most pay-tv carriers in the UK. The channel’s SD feed is still available for some pay-tv carriers, which is why we encourage you to check local listings with the cable company of your election.
