About

W9 History, Coverage, Features

W9 is a French television channel owned by Groupe M6. The channel was launched on March 31, 2005 as the ninth broadcast network in France. The name was chosen as it is said to be the mirror equivalent to M6, one of the sister channels to W9.

This channel started out as a musical channel, but its owners quickly realized that low ratings could force them to change its approach. Hence, Groupe M6 decided to turn this channel into a general entertainment channel, adding reality shows, tv series, animated shows, sports, and movies. This decision paid off for Groupe M6 execs, as nine of the most watched shows in this channel’s history have had sports as their main topic.

On this matter, W9’s sports coverage has mostly centered on airing football games. Some of the events covered by this channel have included FIFA Women’s World Cup games and UEFA Europa League matches. In fact, a UEL game between RB Salzburg and Olympique Marseille has been one of the most watched programs in this channel’s history.

W9 started their broadcasts with a SD feed. On August 1, 2011, Groupe M6 developed a High Definition feed for this channel. The Standard Definition feed is still available in some French regions.
