WDR Fernsehen is a German free-to-air television network owned and operated by the Westdeutscher Rundfunk. It was launched on December 17, 1965 as Westdeutsches Fernsehen (WDF) and started out by serving the North Rhine-Westphalia region. The TV station would change its name in 1988 to West 3 and it would undergo another rebranding in 1994, when it would acquire its current name. WDR Fernsehen is part of the ARD Network of regional channels.
WDR Fernsehen is considered as a general information channel, as its programming covers a wide variety of topics. Over the years, WDR Fernsehen has broadcast entertainment shows, information broadcasts, TV series, children’s programming, talk shows, and sports programs. Speaking about the latter, WDR Fernsehen has focused its sports coverage on the Bundesliga, with most of the news and their shows having to do with the German top-flight.
Although WDR Fernsehen is a free-to-air television network, it is also available on cable and satellite TV services in Germany. It is available on SD and HD across the country, and its feed can also be seen in other European countries such as the Netherlands and Austria.
