About Copa Argentina
The Copa Argentina is a competition played by teams included in the top categories of Argentine football. Clubs from the Superliga Argentina enter this competition on the round of 64. Lower-tier sides fight for the remaining spots in the competition.
The tournament initially began in 1969. However, the 1970 addition never finished as the second leg of the then two-legged final was not played. The event subsequently entered a hiatus and remained this way until it relaunched in 2011. In order to commemorate the return of this cup, a new trophy was designed.
As mentioned earlier, Argentinian top-flight clubs enter this competition in the round of 64 but the tournament as a whole is open to teams from all five levels of the Argentinian football league system. Round I and round II of the Copa Argentina are played in a two-legged format. All ties from the round of 64 onward are one-off matches.
The round of 64 consists of two brackets: the upper bracket and the lower bracket. The games are split evenly across the two brackets – i.e. each bracket stages one of the two semi-final ties. In the end, one team will be left remaining from the two aforementioned sections. These two clubs face off in the final and battle it out for the title. The winner of this competition earns a spot in the Copa Libertadores for the following year.
