The Azerbaijani Premier League, also known as Topaz Premyer Liqasi for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier football category in that country. Its first season took place in 1992, following the country’s independence from the USSR, and it was renamed as Premier League in 2007. It works under a promotion-relegation system with the Azerbaijan First Division.

This competition frequently undergoes changes, mainly because of the number of participants. It started with 26 clubs, but financial problems affecting most of them caused the league to lower the number of teams.

The competition’s format lets all clubs face their rivals four times (twice at home and twice away). At the end of the season, the team with the highest number of points wins the title.

The champions also get to enter the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League. The runners-up, the third-placed team and the Cup champions get enter the early stages of the UEFA Europa League. Meanwhile, on the other side of the table, the team with the lowest amount of points is relegated to the Azerbaijan First Division, or Birinci Divizionu.

Did you know? Qarabag became the first team from this country to enter the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in the 2018-19 season. The Azerbaijani side was paired up against Roma, Atlético, and Chelsea. They picked up only two points.
