About Copa Chile
The Chilean Cup is an annual tournament hosted by the Chilean National Football Association (ANFP). The first edition of this competition was held in 1958. It is considered as one of the most traditional tournaments of its kind in South America. The competition is played by all 43 professional teams in the top three divisions in Chile, plus five amateur teams that earn spots via invites. The winner of the competition qualifies for the following year's Copa Libertadores tournament.
The Copa Chile's format has changed over time. The first editions were based on a knock-out stage only structure but Chilean football officers opted to include a group stage. Eventually, this format was dropped in favor of the current draw, which sees all lower-tier teams fighting for a spot in the Round of 32 via a one-legged tie. All Primera División clubs are given byes for Phase 1 and wait for the winners in the Round of 32. From that point on, all ties are solved in a two-leg format, including the final.
The 2018 edition of the Chilean Cup was historic. It saw Palestino claim the title thanks to their 4-2 win in aggregate against Audax Italiano. This was Palestino’s first title in the 21st Century, and their third title ever.
Did you know? Colo-Colo is the most successful club in Copa Chile history. They marked the beginning of the 21st century's second decade by clinching their 12th title.
