About Super Liga

The Danish Superliga is the top-tier football category in Denmark. It was established in 1991, updating the number of teams that participate in this competition as time has gone by. It started out with ten teams, and now, fourteen teams battle each year for the title.

The tournament has undergone several changes since its inception. This is not limited to the number of contestants, with the opening season being played in the spring of 1991. Come the summer, the format was extended so that the competition would span two calendar years. In 1995-96, this was thrown out the window in favor of a triple round-robin format, with the participants being increased to 12 and each team facing off thrice per season. This did not last forever, as the current structure shows.

The current competition system forces all teams to play 26 regular-season games. The top six teams enter the championship playoffs. The team that makes the most added points in the regular season and in the post-season stage wins the title. The runner-up goes on to play for a spot in the UEFA Europa League’s preliminary rounds. The third-placed side has to play a one-legged matchup against the Danish Cup winner to earn a spot in the UEFA Europa League.

The relegation system in this league is a bit tricky, as the eight lower-ranked teams are divided into two groups. While the winner of each group can still make it to European competitions, the bottom-placed teams in each group get automatically relegated to Denmark’s second division. The second-from-last sides from each group enter a relegation playoff. Here they face off over two legs, with the winner remaining in the top-flight and the loser dropping down alongside the other two.
