About FA Community Shield

The FA Community Shield is considered by UEFA and the English Football Association as the super cup in England. This tournament has been played since the 1908-09 season, with the Premier League winners facing the FA Cup champions. If the same team won both titles, the runner up of the Premier League is handed the nod to play for the season's curtain-raiser. The FA Community Shield typically takes place one week before Matchday 1 of the EPL.

In the past, whenever an FA Community Shield game ended in a draw, both teams were handed the award. This changed in 1993 when the English FA allowed the use of penalties to determine the winner. Arsenal and Tottenham were the last teams to share a trophy, back in 1991.

Manchester United is the most successful team in this competition, with 21 titles to their name (four of them shared). Arsenal and Liverpool follow the Red Devils with fifteen titles each, although Liverpool has shared more trophies than any English side, with five.

Known as the curtain-raiser to fully usher in the new Premier League season, the Community Shield often provides a glimpse of what fans should expect from top sides. It ranks among the most-watched competitions on the planet, and the number of viewers multiplies with every new season. In the 2019 edition, for instance, the game was broadcast live in over 135 countries. Millions of viewers worldwide were on-hand to witness 2018/19 Premier League runners-up Liverpool fall to an agonizing 5-4 penalty shootout defeat to FA Cup and EPL champions Manchester City.

Did you know? Manchester United owns an embarrassing record in this competition. They are the team with the most losses in a row since the tournament’s creation. Their streak started in 1998 and came to an end in 2001.
