About National 2
National 2, known as the Championnat National 2 in full, is France’s fourth division league. This competition sits behind Ligue 1, Ligue 2, and Championnat National in the French football league system. The championship was initially founded in 1927 as the Championnat de France before rebranding to its current format in 1993. The Championnat National 2 operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Championnat National and the Championnat National 3, the country's third and fifth divisions respectively.
A total of 64 teams compete in this league, with the contestants being split geographically across four groups of 16 clubs each. Each group follows a double round-robin format, meaning the teams face off both home and away. The title is awarded to the team with the best record in games against the top six sides in their group. The four group winners earn promotion to the Championnat National. If a reserve team tops a group, then promotion is awarded to the next best non-reserve team.
