About Ligue 2
The Ligue 2 is the second division of French professional football. It is one of two divisions that make up the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the other being Ligue 1. The Ligue 2 was founded in 1933, a year after the establishment of the country's top football division.
The league is contested by 20 teams and operates on the relegation and promotion system. A total of 380 matches are played among the participating clubs in a season. All the clubs play each other twice, totalling 38 matches at the end of the campaign (19 at home and 19 away).
Three points are awarded for a win. A draw attracts a point, and no point is awarded for a defeat. At the end of the season, the champions of the division and the first runner-up are automatically promoted to Ligue 1. They are joined by the winner of the third to fifth place playoffs.
Ligue 2 clubs are eligible to play in the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue. A team can also feature in the UEFA Europa League via the domestic and league cups.
