About FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup
The FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup is an international football competition for female players under the age of 17. The tournament was founded in 2008 by FIFA and is organized every two years. North Korea won the inaugural edition of the competition held in New Zealand.
A total of 16 countries are eligible to qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. With the host nation getting an automatic pass, 15 teams secure qualification from six different continents (Asia, Africa, South America, North America, Oceania, and Europe). The number of slots for each continent is approved by the FIFA Council before the continental qualifiers are played.
Ahead of the final tournament, the 16 teams are seeded based on their performances in previous editions of the U-17 Women's World Cups and confederation tournaments. The host nation is automatically seeded and assigned to position A1 as the 16 teams are divided into four groups of four. Teams from the same confederation are not allowed to be in the same group.
Each team plays three matches in the group phase using the round-robin system. Three points are awarded for a win. A single point is awarded for a draw. Winners and first runners-up from the respective groups are then drawn into the pre-determined brackets for the quarter-finals. The semi-final, third-place playoff, and final matches follow respectively.
