About FIFA World Cup
FIFA World Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The FIFA World Cup is a quadrennial men’s international football competition featuring men’s national football teams of FIFA’s member associations. It was created in 1930, and has been played every four years with the exception of 1942 and 1946, when many sporting events worldwide were canceled due to the Second World War.
The first edition of the FIFA World Cup was hosted by Uruguay and featured 13 teams, before being expanded to 16 until 1978, when the field added eight more sides to become 24. In 1998, the field expanded again to include 32 teams, which remained the format for all editions including the 2022 iteration of the competition. Starting with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the tournament field will include 48 teams.
Given the expanded field, more games will be played in the 2026 version of the FIFA World Cup. The proposed format for this World Cup will be a group stage featuring 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, will feature in the round of 32.
The round of 32, the round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals are all single elimination games. The two losers of the semi-finals have the opportunity to compete for a third-placed medal in the consolation match, while the winners of the semi-finals feature in the final.
Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, and France are among the most successful sides in World Cup history. To date, Germany are the only nation who have won multiple World Cups in both the men’s and women’s editions.
In the USA, media rights over the last editions of the FIFA World Cup have been held by multiple networks. During the 1970s, ABC gained the rights to broadcast a select number of matches. In the 1980s, ESPN covered some matches along with NBC, while TNT provided English-language TV coverage for the 1990 edition.
However, when the USA received the rights to host the 1994 edition, ESPN and ABC were granted the rights to cover the competition, with all matches throughout shown on the networks various TV channels. 1998 was a milestone year for US broadcasters, as all 64 games were shown live on TV for the first time through a collaboration between ESPN and ABC. The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the last exclusively carried by ESPN and ABC, where matches were also live-streamed via the WatchESPN app.
Starting with the 2018 edition, Fox Sports successfully acquired the media rights to several FIFA World Cups, the competition was broadcast to US audiences on Fox channels lineup and live-streamed by the network. The network is also set to broadcast the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA in conjunction with Canada and Mexico.
