About Polish Super Cup

Polish Super Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Polish Super Cup, called Superpuchar Polski, is a one-match competition between the winners of the Polish Ekstraklasa and the Polish Cup, known as Puchar Polski. The competition was created in 1980, but different issues prevented the first edition to be held until 1983. The competition has been suspended from time to time due to different scheduling conflicts, but after many years, it has been played without any interruptions since 2014. To avoid any further problems, the winner of the Ekstraklasa is given the right to host the match against the Cup winners.

The format of the competition is quite simple, as the match is held prior to the start of every Ekstraklasa season, between the final days of July and the start of August. If the game ends in a draw after 90 minutes, penalties will be used to define the winner. Surprisingly, cup winners have done way better than league champions, taking more trophies than those won by the team that won the Ekstraklasa.

Coverage of this tournament has been awarded to Telewizja Polska, who air and stream the clash via their channels, such as TVP Sport and TVP 1, or via their streaming platform (sport.tvp.pl) or via their app for mobile devices (TVP Sport App). The deal will allow the network to cover the competition until 2027.
