"All we can do is improve and, to the fans, all I can say is that they should stick by us and support us because we give 100 percent not just for ourselves, but also for our nation. "Next time we are going to do our best and make the country proud," he added, referring to a Group A rematch in Guinea-Bissau on Monday.  Balde, who plays for French top-tier club Troyes, scored on 30 minutes in Abuja to take the Portuguese-speaking nation to the top of the table.

About Premier League

The Russian Premier League is the top professional football division in Russia. This league kicked off in 2001 and has been administered ever since by the Russian Football Premier League.

Like many European leagues, this competition operates on a promotion-relegation system. The two top-ranked teams every season earn spots in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. An additional berth is awarded to the third-placed team, but that spot requires them to fight for a spot in the tournament’s qualifying rounds. Three additional spots are granted for other teams to play in the Europa League; one of them grants access to the group stage, while two more spots give way to play in the qualifying rounds of the competition.

On the other side of the table, the two worst teams of the season are relegated to the Russian Football National League. The 13th and 14th placed teams enter a playoff stage against the 3rd and 4th-ranked teams in the Russian FNL. The winner of each tie secures a spot in the Russian Premier League, meaning that up to four teams can get relegated every year.

The 2018-19 Russian PL season concluded with Zenit St. Petersburg as champions, beating former champion Lokomotiv Moscow by eight points. This was the fifth title for Zenit. Krasnodar earned the spot to play in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League, and CSKA Moscow, Spartak Moscow, and Arsenal Tula made their way to the UEFA Europa League. On the other side of the table, Yenisey Krasnovarsk and Anzhi Makhachkala were relegated to the RFNL, while Krylia and UFA retained their spots in the Premier League by beating Tomsk and Nizhny Novgorod in their relegation playoff fixtures.

The 2019-20 season of the Russian Premier League will kick off on starts on July 12, 2019, and the last match will be played on May 30, 2020. PFC Sochi and FC Tambov were promoted to play in the Russian Premier League and both sides will be making their debut in the Russian top-flight.

Did you know? Only six teams have been able to win the title since Russia became an independent country, with Spartak Moscow being the most winning team in this competition, with ten titles to their name since 1992.
