About Super Cup

Super Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Russian Super Cup is an annual single match club competition played between the winners of the Russian Premier League and the Russian Cup. In the event that one team wins both the Russian Premier League and the Russian Cup, then the match will be contested between that side and the runners-up in the Russian Premier League.

Founded in 2003, the Russian Super Cup tends to be the curtain-raiser for each new season and is typically played in July. Zenit Saint Petersburg and CSKA Moscow are two of the most successful sides in Russian Super Cup history.

Media rights for the Russian Super Cup in Russia have changed hands since the tournament’s creation in 2003. The tournament was first covered by paid-TV broadcaster NTV Plus until the mid 2000s, when state-owned broadcaster VGTRK acquired media rights and provided TV broadcasts of the Russian Super Cup on Rossiya 2.

In 2014, Gazprom Media’s Match TV acquired broadcast and live-streaming rights for the Russian Super Cup in a multi-year deal.
