About Scottish Premiership

The Scottish Professional Football League, or Ladbrokes Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is Scotland’s top professional football competition. This competition was formed as a merger of the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League in 2013.

This league is home to one of the fiercest rivalries in football: Celtic vs Rangers. The “Old Firm Derby” is one of the most anticipated games for fans around the world, who sometimes don’t realize the ideologies behind this heated rivalry.

Twelve teams play in this competition, with four spots available for their teams to play in European competitions the following year. The champion gets to play the preliminary stages of the UEFA Champions League, while the other three clubs can gain access to the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Europa League; two via their spot on the standings and one more via the Scottish Cup.

With 12 teams involved in the tournament, there have to be at least three games between each side. Once each team has played 33 games, the 12 sides are divided into two groups, where a single-match will be played between each half of the league to complete 38 games. The team with the most points after 38 games will be crowned as champions.

The team with the fewest points after 38 games gets relegated to the Scottish Championship, while the team with the second-lowest amount of points enters a promotion playoff, where all 12 teams will be completed for the subsequent season.

The 2018-19 season saw Celtic claiming their eighth straight title, considering those before the fusion between the two leagues. The Hoops now own 50 titles. Rangers, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen won the three UEFA Europa League spots, while Dundee was the only relegated team, since St. Mirren won their relegation playoff. Ross County was promoted to the Scottish Premiership for the 2019-20 season as Dundee’s replacement.

The 2019-20 campaign starts on August 3, 2019. The final game of this competition is set to be played on May 17, 2020.

Did you know? Despite their financial problems that saw the team relegated after the 2011-12 season, Rangers remains as the most winning side in Scottish football, with 54 league titles.
