About Super Lig
The Süper Lig is the name of the top football category in Turkey, run by the Turkish Football Federation. The Super Lig came as a fusion of the Turkish Football Championship and the National Division. Initially, the league was called “Milli Lig”, and even though 72 clubs have played in this league, only five of them have been able to win the title: Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Trabzonspor and Bursaspor.
The eighteen teams in this league are required to play 34 games to determine its champion. The titleholders earn a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stage, while the runners-up enter the third qualifying round. Three more spots for European competitions are available, with one of them offering direct entry to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. Two more teams are handed spots to play in the tournament’s preliminary rounds. On the other side of the table, the three worst teams of each season are relegated to the 1. Lig.
The 2018-19 season saw Galatasaray claim a second straight Super Lig title, edging Istanbul Basaksehir by just two points. Beskitas, Trabzonspor and Yeni Matalyaspor earned a spot in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, while Bursaspor, Erzurumspor, and Akhisarsoir were relegated to the TFF First League. Denizlispor, Genclerbirligi and Gazisehir Gaziantep were the teams that earned their promotion to the Turkish top-flight.
The 2019-20 season is set to begin on August 16, 2019, while the last matchday is scheduled to be played on May 17, 2020. This will be the first season in the Turkish top-flight for Gazisehir Gaziantep, who will become the 72nd team to play in the top football category in Turkey.
Did you know…? Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, and Besiktas are the only teams that have played in every Super Lig season up to this date. The 2019-20 season will have six of the original teams that played in the league’s inaugural campaign: Ankaragucu, Besiktas, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Genclerbirligi and Goztepe.
