The team failed to make the playoffs finishing in eighth place of the Eastern Conference. Vieira was the captain of the French World Cup Champions team in 1998

Patrick Vieira, the same man that got to lift the World Cup with France in 1998, is the new coach appointed to lift New York Football Club from a first season where expectations were not met. The 39-year-old former player will be the second manager in the history of this franchise that just finished its debut season.

With the names of David Villa, Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard added to this roster, there was a lot of expectation to see how the team did. They ended up falling short of reaching the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. With 37 points after 34 games, the team finished in eighth place, just behind Orlando City SC.

The team made the official announcement early Monday morning (ET)

Vieira is coming from England, where he spent some time as the head coach of the Elite Development Squad in Manchester City FC. It is his only coaching job since retiring in the summer of 2011. As a player, Vieira won UEFA European Championship with France and at Club level, three English Premier League titles, five FA Cup titles and three Serie A titles.

The Frenchman was a fantastic football player

"Patrick’s ability, vision and the respect in which he is held by everyone who works with him, speaks volumes for his character and capacity to succeed," NYCFC's president Tom Glick said in a statement. "I am excited to work with him and I know the energy he will bring to the role will have a hugely positive impact across the Club.”

The French manager will be flying into New York so he can meet with his new team this Tuesday. Sporting Director Claudio Reyna and Goalkeeping coach Rob Vartughian will also get a chance to exchange some ideas with the former World Cup champion.

Vieira's MCFC Family is excited for him

"His exemplary drive, passion and dedication have always marked him out as a rare talent and all of those qualities, alongside his understanding of the game, make him a natural choice," Reyna said about Vieira.

Among all the candidates in the recruitment process, Vieira's leadership skills and knowledge about the game made him a candidate that NYCFC refused to ignore. His motivational skills is something that the team may really need to rebound in their second year in the Major League Soccer.

"I am delighted to take up the role of Head Coach of New York City FC. To work with this squad, with Claudio Reyna and Rob Vartughian and the fantastic support team that is in place, is an exciting prospect for any coach," Vieira said about his new job, which he will officially get started with on January 1, 2016.

The expectations are high for the new coach
