It was a nervous but happy Sunday for Patrick Vieira as New York City FC cruised to a 4-3 victory over Chicago Fire in the MLS.

Arsenal legendary midfielder Patrick Vieira began his coaching career on a high note as New York City FC cruised past Chicago Fire in a nervy but thrilling encounter played at the Toyota Park. The visitors opened the score sheet through Thomas ‘Tommy’ McNamara in the 10th minute of the game. The hosts then pulled one back through Razvan Cocis who wrestled with the defenders and blasted the ball past goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

Tony Taylor added the second for the visitors. This was his first goal for the New York outfit after sitting out for the better part of last season due to injury.

But the thrilling encounter was not yet over; Khiry Shelton then added the third for Vieira’s side after a disappointing campaign last year, when he only managed to score only one goal.

The two sides went to the break with the score sheet reading 3-1 and when the second-half resumed, the hosts pulled one back through Kennedy Igboananike in the 49th minute.

But it was Mix Diskerud’s goal that was the highlight of the second-half. The 25-year-old scored a wonderful volley after receiving a perfect assist from Thomas McNamara in the opponent’s box to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.

Although the hosts managed to add the third through a penalty awarded due to a handball, the damage had already been done as Patrick Vieira’s men went ahead to protect their lead and emerge victorious in the thrilling encounter.
