Three games down, three to go. For 51 sides hoping to book their spot at the AFCON 2017 tournament in Gabon, this is now the halfway point. Some teams are unfortunately already out of contention, whilst others have pretty much sealed their spot in next year's continental competition. This is certainly the case for Mozambique and Ghana as they will meet for the second time in just three days this Sunday.

Having lost all three of their qualifying matches thus far, Mozambique's chances at participating in what will be their fifth AFCON tournament do not look good. Abel Xavier's side are bottom of their quartet, with just one goal scored thus far and will be coming into this game having suffered a 3-1 loss against Ghana. Despite the fact that the Black Stars were missing key players like Asamoah Gyan and Andrew Ayew due to injury, and overall did not put in their best-ever performance, the Mambas were unable to take advantage of this, and as such, are three points behind both Rwanda and Mauritius.

However, should they manage to beat Ghana this Sunday, Xavier's squad could put themselves back in contention for a possible runners-up spot - that is, provided that one of Rwanda or Mauritius also lose in their own clash taking place the following week. Yet, given that they have struggled so far at this juncture and have not fared well in their past four AFCON tournaments - being dumped out at the first round each time - they will certainly face an uphill mountain to climb as they hope to pull off a shock upset this weekend.

Ghana

Meanwhile, Avram Grant's men have picked up nine points out of nine and are cruising along towards securing their spot in next year's AFCON tournament. In 2015, the Black Stars were painfully close to lifting the trophy, only to lose to the Ivory Coast after an intense penalty shoot-out. Although they were far from their very best in their match against Mozambique this past Thursday, they nonetheless managed to get the job done and naturally will be expected to make it a fourth straight win in their upcoming re-match at the Estádio do Zimpeto on Sunday.

Following this match, the Black Stars will have a brief hiatus before taking on Mauritius in June and then Rwanda to wrap up qualification in September. Naturally, fans will hope that the team will pick up another victory this weekend so as to guarantee their spot ahead of their final two games. All in all, although they were not up to their usual standards on Thursday, Ghana are by far the favorites to finish this upcoming game as the winners.
