Judging from their recent good form, Russia are expected to light up the Euro 2016. We take a quick look at their profile.
Russia’s UEFA Euro history
The Russians first participated in the UEFA European Championship from 1960 to 1992 as the Soviet Union. However, in 1996, they participated independently as the Republic of Russia, and finished 14th after playing three games, losing two and drawing one. Their next appearance was back in 2004 when they finished 10th, won one game and lost two out of three. In 2008, they reached the semi-final of the tournament and finished third. They played five games, won three, and lost two. In 2012, their performance declined and they finished ninth, played three games and experienced mixed results.
Recent form
In 2015, Russia played 10 competitive matches, including qualifiers and friendlies. Out of the 10, they won seven, lost two and drew one. This year, as of mid-May, they have only played two friendlies against Lithuania and France. They beat Lithuania 3-0 but lost to France 4-2. Before facing England in their opening match of the Euro 2016 on 11th June, the Russians will play friendly matches against Czech Republic and Serbia.
Manager’s profile
Retired footballer Leonid Slutsky (below) is the head coach of the Russian national football team.
The 45-year-old ex-FC Moscow and CSKA Moscow boss took over the Russian national team on August 7, 2015 to replace Fabio Capello in a contract that would last until the end of Euro 2016. Surprisingly, Russia won all their qualifying matches, a performance that took them to the Euro 2016. Since taking over the Russian team, he has overseen eight matches, won six and lost two.
UEFA Euro 2016 broadcasters in Russia
