Group D action begins today when Ghana takes on Uganda in the African Cup of Nations. Ahead of this clash, we have compiled some of the key facts and stats you need to know about this match.

Ghana's winless run

The Black stars of Ghana are winless in their last five matches. They drew with Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa, then lost to Russia and Egypt.

Uganda's historic qualification

The Uganda Cranes have qualified for AFCON for the first time in 39 years. The East African stars have not lost in their last two competitive games, having secured a draw with Ghana and a win against Congo in Kampala.

Head to head record

The last time the two sides faced each other was in Ghana in October last year for their World Cup Qualifier, and the result was a barren draw. Prior to that meeting, Ghana had won two and drawn one of their last three matches against the Cranes.

Uganda Cranes' lineup vs Ghana in the 1978 final

Title count

The Black Stars have won the AFCON four times - in 1963, 1978, 1965 and 1982. Uganda were the runnersup in the 1978 final against hosts Ghana.

The managers

Both sides are managed by foreign coaches - Avram Grant for Ghana and Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic for Uganda. Grant is more popular and experienced than Micho, having managed the likes of Portsmouth, Chelsea and West Ham in England. Micho, on the other hand, has more experienced in African football both at the national and club level. He has managed clubs such as SC Villa of Uganda, Saint-George of Ethiopia, Orlando Pirates of South Africa, Young Africans of Tanzania and Al-Hilal Omdurman of Sudan. At the national level, he has managed the Yugoslavian u20 national team and Rwanda.

This match will be a repeat of the 1978 final. With Ghana having participated in the tournament 20 times compared to Uganda, who have made five appearances, it would be interesting to see how the Cranes will make up for their 39-year absence on the big stage today.
