Match Facts & Stats

  • Cameroon and Ghana have both won four AFCON titles
  • Les Lions Indomptables won it in 1984, 1988, 2000, and 2002
  • The Black Stars won it in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1972
  • Cameroon and Ghana have played each other three times before in the African Cup of Nations; Ghana failed to win any of those matches (D2, L1)
  • This is a re-match of the 2008 AFCON semi-final. Cameroon won 1-0 during that time
  • Interestingly, the last three times Cameroon reached the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations, they have progressed to the final
  • At least one of the Ayew brothers has been directly involved in 10 of Ghana's last 14 goals at the AFCON (five goals and two assists for Andre, two goals and an assist for Jordan)
  • Ghana have scored seven goals from the penalty spot in the African Cup of Nations since the beginning of the 2013 edition

Will it be Cameroon or Ghana taking on Egypt or Burkina Faso in the 2017 AFCON final?

Cameroon

How they got here: Cameroon drew their opener against Burkina Faso, then beat debutants Guinea-Bissau 2-0. They then recorded yet another stalemate in their last group stage game against hosts Gabon to finish second in their quartet behind Burkina Faso on five points. Hugo Broos's side then held their nerve in a tense spot-kick shootout to eliminate Senegal after star man Sadio Mane missed his penalty to book their spot in the final four.

Broos faced a crisis pre-tournament as several key players opted not to participate. That means this Cameroon side is a much weaker and less experienced one than in prior competitions, but that has not prevented Les Lions Indomptables from successfully navigating their way to this juncture.

Ghana

How they got here: Ghana earned two 1-0 wins over Mali and Uganda, and despite losing to Egypt by the same score-line, it was enough to see the Black Stars through to the quarter-finals. Avram Grant's men put on a much-improved performance to beat DR Congo 2-1, which marked the first game they have scored more than one goal.

Grant's side have not been immune from criticism, with some feeling that the team could do more. Two out of their four goals scored so far at AFCON 2017 have been via penalties, and in fact, the game-winner against DR Congo also came from the spot after the Leopards had equalized. With Asamoah Gyan set to return, the Black Stars' attack will have Ghana's all-time top goalscorer in their ranks, which will give the 2015 AFCON finalists an extra option as they try to break down Cameroon's stingy defense.
