The Mexican National Team returns to this tournament in better shape than in their disappointing 2013 performance. Juan Carlos Osorio's men were able to qualify to this tournament after beating the USMNT in a play-off game, and they will surely make things difficult for the hosts and the Portuguese National Team.
Reaching the semi-finals will be Mexico's goal under Osorio, a stage the Mexicans haven't reached since 2005. Coach Osorio seems to be quite interested in this competition, as it would legitimate his process with El Tri, which has been harshly criticized by experts who don't seem to like his rotation policy despite his excellent results as Mexico's tactician.
Mexicos' Confederations Cup record
"El Tri" has played in six of the nine editions of this tournament, including those labeled as King Fahd Cup back in the 1990s. Mexico won the 1999 edition as hosts, while adding a third place in 1995 and a 4th spot in 2005. Their most recent performance in this competition saw them leave Brazil after just three games, following consecutive losses against Brazil and Italy.
Due to their continuous presence in this competition, Mexico holds the second best record in the tournament. Only Brazil, with 33 games played, has a better record than the Mexicans in this competition.
Mexico's most recent games
El Tri has played seven games in 2017 between competitive and friendly matches. The outcome is quite impressive, as Osorio's men have won five, lost once and drawn one more. Their victories against Costa Rica )(2-0) and facing Trinidad & Tobago away were highly celebrated, as the victory against the Caribbean side ended a 40-year drought for Mexico without a win in that country.

The man in the tactician's bench
Colombian-born coach Juan Carlos Osorio has been in charge of Mexico's National Team sinnce October, 2015. His tactics include a highly criticized rotation policy, which hasn't been well received by experts in Mexico, who were used to see the same team day in and day out. Despite all their criticism, Osorio has led Mexico to 18 wins out of 23 games coached, giving him one of the best success rates of all time for any El Tri manager. Nevertheless, that 7-0 blowout against Chile in the Copa América Centenario hasn't been forgotten, and only a major success with Mexico will make fans forget about that disappointing performance.
The Colombian boss has only lost one competitive match since he took over Mexico's coaching duties.
