The two European icons began the new campaign well in their attempt to win silverware in the United States.

Major League Soccer is back and the new season in the USA top-flight is currently underway. The current campaign kicked off on Saturday which means a few icons of the beautiful game are back in action for their clubs.

Two of them are Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney. The earlier moved to LA on a free transfer while the latter left Everton for the USA capital for an undisclosed fee for a new challenge in probably the final chapters of their careers. While both men missed out on last season's Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup, the two enjoyed lovely debut campaigns. Who will impress the most in 2019, however?

The Swedish striker arrived at LA Galaxy three months prior to Rooney's DC United switch and made an instant impact for his new club in his first match. The 37-year-old came on as a substitute to score twice en route to a 4-3 triumph over Los Angeles FC, netting a 45-yard half volley before grabbing the winning goal in stoppage time.

Zlatan's debut was nothing short of a fairy tale

The former PSG star registered his first MLS hat-trick against Orlando City before netting his 500th career goal against Toronto FC. Zlatan would finish his first season with LA Galaxy with a whopping 22 goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances.

2019 began with a bang for the Swede, as his led his team to a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire. After being named team captain prior to the season's kick-off, he wore the armband and scored on the opening day.

Rooney's debut campaign wasn't bad as well as he scored 12 times and assisted another seven in 20 appearances in the regular season. While the former Three Lions ace made a name for himself as a deadly forward in Europe, his playmaking skills took center-stage at his Washington-based team -- who can forget when he prevented an open-net goal in the 96th minute before setting up the winning goal within seconds with an inch-perfect cross.

Who can forget this moment of magic from Rooney?

He helped his club make the MLS Cup playoffs and while he was unable to save them from elimination against Colombus Crew, the Englishman was named D.C. United's MVP for the 2018 campaign.

The Man United legend turned playmaker once more in his team's opening game, assisting one of two goals they scored against MLS Cup champions Atlanta United. This was a promising start for the club as the Golden Boy yearns to win silveware.

However, there is another European icon in the form of Zlatan vying for glory -- albeit in another conference. Both men will likely light up Major League Soccer once again but only time will reveal who will shine brighter.
