If true, the Reds would eclipse the amount they spent to land Van Dijk.

If the latest rumors are anything to go by, Liverpool are aiming to break their club transfer record for one of Germany’s most highly-rated players. According to Mundo Depotivo, that man is none other than Kai Havertz.

The 20-year-old is a highly-sought-after talent who is currently plying his trade at Bayer Leverkusen. Last season, the midfielder scored a whopping 17 goals and racking up three assists.

This term, things have not gone according to the plan for the youngster, netting only twice in 14 appearances, but this has done little to put off his suitors. The Reds are one of many interested parties and according to the Catalan tabloid, the Merseyside giants are ready to break the bank to land his signature.

Man United are another English giant interested in Havertz but it is believed the Red Devils have shifted their focus to Bruno Fernandes, thus paving the way for Liverpool to land their target. Mundo write that the Premier League leaders are ready to submit a $139M bid for the German, which would eclipse the club-record $98M fee paid to sign Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton.

However, Liverpool fans should take this rumor with a pinch of salt. The Reds recently added Takumi Minamino to their ranks, who operates in a similar role to Havertz. While it is possible for both players to coexist, given that Lallana could leave and would need replacing, it is hard to see the Merseyside giants spend that huge amount.
