After just over a two-year halt due to a match-fixing scandal, Ghana’s Women’s Premier League is underway.

On January 18, 2020, women's football players unfolded and wore the uniforms of Ghana's 16 women's clubs for the first time since October 2017.

Ghana Football Association's president Kurt Okraku announced a seven-member leadership board for the league led by Hilary Boateng, an HR Consultant, before the turn of the year. The goal for this group is to improve the quality of the West African nation's Women's top-flight and of course, keep it fair.

Women's football journalist Rosalind Amoh serves as the vice-chairperson of the committee and fellow journalists Nana Aba Anamoah, Cleopatria Nsiah Nketiah and Jerry Dugbatey join her as members.

The league, which is divided across two regions – North and South – will have representatives in each. Nana Opoku Fosu represents the northern region while Christian Isaac Mensah represents the south.

Matchday one took place from January 17-20 with four games in each region. Each team will play 14 matches throughout 14 weekends with the final matchday taking place on May 29-31. The league will conclude with a final between the winners of each sector.

A match between Police Ladies FC and Lady Strikers FC was streamed live on the Ghana Women's Premier League's official Facebook page. It might not seem like a big deal, but it is a sign of progress and growing audiences in the nation. The committee has made it clear that the refurbished league will require better outreach with fans. Each team has been required to have Twitter accounts run by journalists, most females.

Okraku was very pleased with league partners Electroland Ghana Ltd, distributors of NASCO electronic appliances, and their sponsorship package for the 2019/2020 campaign. The distributor announced that it was also happy to join this journey as it has been the sponsor of the men's league for two seasons. There will be a Player of the Month award for each zone that earns the players a 32-inch Nasco TV set, a hand dryer and a trophy. A Player of the Match award consisting of a Nasco phone and a hand dryer will be handed after each game.

Twelve teams founded the league back in 2012 breaking it up in the two sectors each housing six teams. The winningest team over the first five seasons was northern club Hasaacas Ladies with three titles and a runner-up finish. The second most decorated club is Ampem Darkoa from the South Zone with two titles and a runner-up run.

We'll see if either of these legendary Ghanaian clubs can relieve glory or if a new side can rise after the two-year absence.
