Brighton & Hove Albion went on to take down a then-undefeated Chelsea side 2-1 at Kingsmeadow on Sunday, altering the top of the FA Women’s Super League table.

Matchday 14 of the FA WSL began with a shocking, yet deserved, Aston Villa 1-0 home win over Tottenham on Saturday. Last week, we discussed how forward Mana Iwabuchi has impacted the Claret and Blue since her arrival in January 2021. The Japanese captain registered two goals and one assist, including a screamer in the weekend, after just four games, helping the Villains to a win and a draw in the process.

The weekend's action continued with five games on Sunday, including marquee matchups between Manchester United and Reading, and Arsenal and Manchester City. However, it was Brighton & Hove Albion's 2-1 win over Chelsea at Kingsmeadow that took the spotlight from Man City's 2-1 win against Arsenal and Reading's 2-0 upset over Man Utd. Additionally, the other two games of the weekend between Everton and Birmingham City and West Ham United and Bristol City ended in one-all draws.

FA WSL Top 3 scorers

Dutch Striker Vivianne Miedema remains at the top of the scoring charts with 12 goals despite not scoring in Sunday's meeting against Manchester City. However, it looks like the 24-year-old will have her eyes set on back-to-back FA WSL Golden Boot awards now that Arsenal is pretty much out of the 2020/21 title race.

Australian striker Samantha Kerr held the second position in the scoring charts and drew closer to Miedema after scoring Chelsea's lone goal this weekend, bringing her 2020/21 scoring tally up to double digits with 10 goals. The main change in the top 3 charts after Matchday 14 was the introduction of England great Ellen White, who is now level with her compatriot Fran Kirby at eight goals after scoring the opening goal against Arsenal on Sunday.

FA WSL top headlines

  • White's goal against Arsenal was her 55th FA WSL league goal and put her back to the top of the all-time WSL top goalscorers list, topping Miedema's 54 goals.
  • Irish midfielder Megan Connolly was undoubtedly the player of the week after a masterclass performance against Chelsea that ultimately fueled Brighton's upset win. With one goal and one assist, the 23-year-old Florida State University graduate helped the Seagulls to be six points clear from relegation.
  • Iwabuchi scored the 250th goal of the 2020/21 FA WSL season and it was a banger!
  • Manchester City's Chloe Kelly overtook Arsenal's Katie McCabe on assists after facilitating a pair of goals on Sunday against Arsenal. The 23-year-old now leads the assists charts with eight after 13 matches played.
  • Manchester City's Lauren Hemp became the most efficient shooter in the league, topping the goals per shot chart after her winner against Arsenal on Sunday. Fifty percent of her shots end up in the back of the net.
  • Brighton's Aileen Wheelan celebrated her 50th appearance with the club with a goal against Chelsea on Sunday.

Top FA WSL matches to watch, Feb. 10-14

Chelsea vs. Arsenal – Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. ET

With the Blues suffering from their first loss of the season and the Gunners pretty much out of the race for the FA WSL title, both teams enter this matchup at their lowest form this year. Arsenal is arguably in a worse position as it fell nine points behind Chelsea after losing to Man City last weekend. On the other hand, Chelsea dealt get out of jail cards to Manchester United and Manchester City by falling to the Seagulls. Arsenal will head into the match with nothing to lose and have one last chance at re-entering the race for the title by dealing Chelsea consecutive losses.

Manchester City vs. Manchester United – Friday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. ET

The Manchester Derby has never been more meaningful than the upcoming one on Friday. Manchester United is tied in points with Chelsea and in second place due to goal differential after 14 games. On the other hand, Manchester City has crept up on the top two positions with 30 points after 13 games. Both teams will hope for Arsenal to beat or draw Chelsea on Wednesday to give themselves a chance to overtake the Blues with a win and lead the FA WSL table after Matchday 15.
