Spurs look to pull off the league double over their bitter rivals, with bragging rights being all at stake for the Gunners. Here's a preview of Arsenal vs Tottenham.

Arsenal vs Tottenham – preview

Sunday is North London Derby day, with Arsenal gearing up to host bitter rivals Tottenham in one of the most crucial remaining fixture for the Gunners. Bragging rights is up for grabs, and for Spurs, a top-four spot is at stake, hence the importance of this 11:30 a.m. showdown.

With Mikel Arteta's men sitting in 10th with a staggering 13-point disadvantage on fourth-placed Chelsea, it's safe to say a top-four finish is all but out of the question for the Gunners. With 11 wins and 11 defeats from the 27 fixtures they've played this term, it's not hard to see why Aubameyang and Co. have struggled in 2020/21 as consistency has eluded them.

This is evident in their recent form, with the Emirates Stadium side going from securing a spectacular 3-1 win at Leicester to throwing away three points in their 1-1 draw at Burnley a week later. A Granit Xhaka blunder awarded the Clarets their equalizer on a silver platter, with Arteta lamenting the error-prone aspect of his team. This trend did not start at Turf Moor, nor did it end there, with the Gunners once again committing a horrendous error that led to a goal, this time in their Europa League clash with Olympiakos.

Fortunately, strikes from Gabriel and Elneny spared Arsenal's blushes as it helped them win the first leg of their round of 16 clash 3-1, but it did not save them from the Mikel's ire. The visibly-irritated Spaniard welcomed the result but was left upset by the performance and will need to address this issue ahead of Sunday's derby. Given the form of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, and – as of late – Gareth Bale; the hosts cannot afford to be charitable at the back.

In Spurs' most recent EPL fixture, a 4-1 triumph over Crystal Palace, Kane and Bale came away with a brace each. The Welshman has netted four times and assisted two goals in his last four Premier League outings while the English striker bagged back-to-back braces, netting twice in Tottenham's 2-0 triumph over Dinamo Zagreb. The Three Lions sensation came off that game with a knock and was seen icing his knee but is expected to be fine for this fixture.

His presence is crucial for Mourinho as the Portuguese tactician looks to complete the double over Arteta's side, having beaten them 2-0 in the reverse fixture in early December. Victory at the Emirates Stadium would see Tottenham move within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea while boasting a game in hand, thus bolstering their odds of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. A run of three consecutive victories has seen the north London outfit return to the fold. Victory in Sunday's derby would be the icing.

Team news

Arsenal: Arteta has no injury concerns heading into this fixture. Emile Smith Rowe made his comeback in the 3-1 midweek European win and is in contention to feature. Pepe will be hopeful of a start while Pablo Mari could return to the lineup.

Tottenham: Despite the recent injury scare, Harry Kane is all but destined to feature in Sunday's clash. Toby Alderweireld, Sergio Reguilon and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are all expected to return to the lineup for this derby.

Key stats

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last five encounters against Arsenal and look to go six games unbeaten for the first time in their history.
