How to Watch and Stream the World Cup in Canada

2022 FIFA World Cup TV & Online Broadcast Guide for Canada

November 14, 2022 By Ali M.
Les Rouges have ended their long wait for a FIFA World Cup appearance but will Alphonso Davies and Co. do their nation proud at Qatar 2022? Here's how you can follow their matches in the November tournament.

How to Watch the World Cup in Canada - Match schedule, TV and streaming

CTV has obtained free-to-air Canadian rights to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The English-language broadcaster has announced that Qatar 2022 games will be available on CTV's web and mobile apps throughout the tournament.

Pay TV broadcaster TSN has secured Canadian rights to the upcoming competition. The Bell Media-owned network has direct access to Canada's group-stage matches against Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. All of TSN's 2022 FIFA World Cup matches are to be streamed live on its Over-the-Top online subscription service and the TSN App on mobile devices. TSN is expected to produce pre and post-match shows, analysis, match highlights, and more on its linear channels and digital platforms. The 2022 FIFA World Cup terrestrial TV rights in Canada are owned by sister networks RDS and CTV.

RDS holds French-language Canadian rights to this year's tournament. RDS' offer includes live matches on TV and live streams on its app.

About Canada in FIFA World Cup history

This edition of the FIFA World Cup will be special for Canada as this is the first time they have qualified for the competition in 36 years. In fact, the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico was the one and only time Les Rouges appeared in this tournament. They were grouped with the Soviet Union, France, and Hungary in the group stage and thus did not make it out of the first hurdle, failing to qualify for the knockout stage after losing all three games by a score line of 5-0.

Who is Canada's coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Canada are managed by John Herdman, a head coach whose route to his current spot was nothing short of interesting. The Englishman started out his career at Sunderland and was the development coach for the youth academy until 2001. His first role as a head coach came with the New Zealand women's national team from 2006 to 2011, helping the senior team qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2007 and 2011. In 2011, he took over the Canada women's national team before making the switch to the men's senior team in January 2018. Herdman eventually secured qualification for Qatar 2022 by March 27, 2022.

Canada's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Given that Canada are yet to score a single goal or win a single game at the FIFA World Cup, those will be two milestones on the to-do list. Nonetheless, after topping the CONCACAF qualifying round ahead of regional giants Mexico and the USA, Les Rouges will aim for a round of 16 berth at the very least. However, this won't come easy as they have been grouped with Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. The star-studded Red Devils are most likely to win the group while the 2018 FIFA World Cup runners-up, led by Modric, are the second-best bet.

Canada: Key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Three names come to mind when discussing Canada's key players for Qatar 2022, with the first being Bayern Munich sensation Alphonso Davies. The world-class left-back is only 21 but is already regarded as one of the best players for his position. The Bundesliga ace sadly missed out on a number of qualifiers after suffering complications from COVID-19 which sidelined him for nearly four months. In fact, there were fears he could miss out on the competition but after making a much-welcomed return to the pitch back in April, Davies is fit and ready to go this winter.

Herdman's side will need to be clinical in attack if they wish to make it out of the group stage and here's where their other two key players come into the equation. Jonathan David, who finished the CONCACAF qualifiers as the second-best scorer with nine goals, will look to do his nation proud. The Lille ace finished the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season as the sixth-best goal scorer and is in the hunt for the French top-flight golden boot this season.

Cyle Larin also deserves a mention. Despite his poor start to life at Club Brugge, the 27-year-old was the top scorer during the FIFA World Cup CONCACAF qualifiers, netting an impressive 13 times.

Canada's roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Goalkeepers: Milan Borjan (Red Star Belgrade/Serbia), James Pantemis (CF Montreal), Dayne St. Clair (Minnesota United)

Defenders: Sam Adekugbe (Hatayspor/Turkey), Derek Cornelius (Vancouver Whitecaps - Panetolikos/Greece), Alistair Johnston (CF Montreal), Richie Laryea (Nottingham Forrest/England), Kamal Miller (CF Montreal), Steven Vitoria (Chaves/Portugal), Joel Waterman (CF Montreal)

Midfielders: Stephen Eustaquio (FC Porto/Portugal), Liam Fraser (Deinze/Belgium), Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas/Turkey), Mark-Anthony Kaye (Toronto FC), Ismael Kone (CF Montreal), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC), Samuel Piette (CF Montreal), David Wotherspoon (St. Johnstone/Scotland)

Forwards: Tajon Buchanan (Club Brugge/Belgium), Lucas Cavallini (Vancouver Whitecaps), Jonathan David (Lille/France), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich/Germany), Junior Hoillett (Reading/England), Cyle Larin (Club Brugge/Belgium), Liam Miller (FC Basel/ Switzerland), Ike Ugbo (Troyes/France)

Canada's 2022 FIFA World Cup schedule

Alphonso Davies and Co. are in Group F alongside Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. Their toughest match will be their opening game against the Red Devils on November 23 but their showdowns with Modric and Co. and the North African giants could play a bigger part in the race to make the round of 16.
