France: Bundesliga breakout star gets swift call-up after Nkunku injury

November 15, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Les Bleus will be without one of their star attackers at the upcoming World Cup but have called in an able replacement.

The France national team has been dealt another setback ahead of their World Cup opener following an injury to Christopher Nkunku. The 25-year-old forward was forced to exit Tuesday night's training session prematurely after being on the receiving on of a tackle by Eduardo Camavinga.

Ahead of Wednesday trip to Qatar, France held their final training session to put the 23-man squad selected for the upcoming World Cup through their paces. With Karim Benzema yet to return from an injury spell, Les Bleus were counting on the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Kylian Mbappe to deliver the goods as they ready themselves for the ultimate challenge. However, they will now be required to make due without Nkunku who is now completely ruled out of the tournament.

According to initial reports, the former Paris Saint-Germain starlet injured his knee after taking a hit from Eduardo Camavinga's tackle. The RB Leipzig man agonizingly fell to the ground and was immediately received medical attention. Despite being able to exit the field without any assistance, a subsequent statement by the French Football Federation revealed that he will not be able to participate at the World Cup.

Instead, in-form Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Randal Kolo Muani has now been called to replace Nkunku. The fast-rising striker has been impressive for his Bundesliga club this season, scoring five goals and assisting nine in just 13 appearances for Oliver Glasner's side. The player is expected to join the squad in the coming hours as they prepare to jet off to Qatar ahead of their opening game against Australia on November 22nd.
