WATCH: Alphonso Davies misses golden chance to score Canada's first-ever World Cup goal

November 23, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The 22-year-old could not convert a spot-kick to make history in Wednesday night's encounter.

Canada's star man Alphonso Davies passed on a glorious opportunity to make history in Wednesday's clash with Belgium. The 22-year-old defender missed a penalty to become the first player to ever score a World Cup goal for the Maple Leafs in their opening Group F encounter.

Belgium were almost put on the back foot after Yannick Carrasco saw a goal-bound strike hitting his arm in his side's penalty area. The match referee did not spot the infringement immediately but was notified by the Video Assistant Referee to have a second look. The decision was then given in favor of the North Americans.

However, and rather unfortunately, Alphonso Davies attempt from the spot could not find its way into the net with Thibaut Courtois make the save to keep his side in the game. Watch:

Interestingly, Thibaut Courtois's feat made him the first goalkeeper to save a penalty for Belgium at the World Cup since 1966.
