The two experienced Germans will return to the national team setup for the first time since 2019.

A day after Didier Deschamps ended the exile of Karim Benzema, calling the Real Madrid superstar back to the French national team set-up, German boss Joachim Low has decided to do something similar. With Euro 2020 fast approaching, the Mannschaft boss named two outcasts in his 26-man squad this summer's UEFA tournament.

They are none other than Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller, two of Germany's most successful and most experienced players. The reason for their previous omissions bears no resemblance with that of Benzema, it should be pointed out. The center-back and midfielder were shown the door by Joachim Low after the disastrous 2018 World Cup and 2018-19 UEFA Nations League campaigns in a bid to inject youth into the national team.

However, things have not gone according to plan, with the four-time World Cup winners suffering a second consecutive UEFA Nations League disappointment in the absence of their experienced players. Low admitted this, confessing that he had to reassess the situation after witnessing Muller's and Hummels' excellent season.

"The development has not progressed as well as we wanted," the outgoing manager stated. "That's why we said: We have to check everything again.

"They both played a strong season so we brought them back. You can give the team something in terms of leadership. You know our way of thinking and a large part of the team. We made the decision back then because we wanted to give the boys the chance to develop."

Both players were said to be upset with the manner in which Low axed them from the national team. Regardless, they accepted the call-up with utmost pride and took to social media to express joy over the chance of donning Germany's famous jersey once again.

"I am really happy and proud to play for Germany again," the Dortmund center-back wrote on Twitter while his Bayern Munich counterpart posted a picture of himself smiling and giving a thumbs up with the caption "back again".

Not everyone wanted by the manager will feature in this summer's European Championship. Marc-André ter Stegen was ruled out due to injury while Marco Reus turned down a spot in the Euro 2020 squad, admitting that his body needs rest after enduring another injury-ravaged season.
