England's Football Association have reportedly started to put together a short list of candidates to potentially replace Gareth Southgate.

On Sunday, England were eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup after reigning champs France beat them 2-1 in the quarter-finals. This means that Gareth Southgate's quest to become the first England manager to reach back to back semi-finals has been dashed, and more significant, England will have to wait another couple of years in order to try to finally win their first major title since 1966.

This tournament has seen many managers leave their posts either voluntarily or via being sacked, including Belgium's Roberto Martinez, Brazil's Tite, and Spain's Luis Enrique. While Southgate has not yet fully decided whether he will remain to guide England through the upcoming EURO 2024 qualification process, or will opt to pursue other ventures, England's FA have reportedly already started putting together a list of prospective candidates with several coaches apparently keen on throwing their hats into the ring.

According to one report, two candidates are none other than Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, who have managed Premier League giants Chelsea and Tottenham respectively. Another coach that is apparently mooting over whether to move into international management is Leicester City's Brendan Rodgers.

For now, however, Southgate remains in charge and no reports indicate that he is at risk of a sacking as he is under contract until 2024. The 52-year-old noted that he needs time to decide his future, but it makes sense for England's FA to have some potential candidates in mind should he decide to take a step back before his contract expires in less than two years' time.
