The Croatian playmaker may have played his final World Cup match, and fans were sure to pay their respects to his classy international career.

The game between Croatia and Argentina may have been dominated by all the buzz generated by Lionel Messi, but there was another top class player that earned the respect of both fandoms at Lusail Stadium.

The man was none other than Luka Modric, who played what could have been his final FIFA World Cup match and ended up being subbed off the pitch by coach Zlatko Dalic when the game had already been resolved in Argentina's favor.

The decision by coach Dalic was met with mixed feelings by fans from both teams, but almost everyone at the stadium decided to pay their respects to the Croatian footballer as he walked off the pitch.

The footballer was spotted shedding a few tears while on the dugout, and when the game came to an end, his former teammate at Real Madrid, Angel Di María, hugged him and offered him some comfort.

"The first thing Di María did when the game ended? He hugged Luka Modric. Massive gesture from one legend to another".

Di María was not the only one to offer his condolences to Modric, as Sergio Agüero was also spotted down the tunnel giving the Croatian ace a big hug.

Croatia will go on to play the third-place match on Saturday, but it is yet to be revealed if Modric will have any role in that game. Be that as it may, the amount of respect shown by fans from both teams and players is a nice gesture after the woeful images from Argentina players mocking Netherlands' footballers on Friday.
