The Manchester Derby kicked off the weekend action in the Premier League and it did not disappoint!
This Old Trafford clash had everything: beautiful football, a brilliant comeback, and the refereeing controversies that have become synonymous with the English top flight in recent years.
Manchester United welcomed the Cityzens and were looking for their fifth consecutive home victory in the Premier League. And that is exactly what Erik ten Hag's side delivered, beating the defending champions 2-1 after late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
It was Guardiola's men who struck first with Jack Grealish breaking the deadlock right at the hour mark after heading a brilliant cross from—you guessed it—Kevin de Bruyne into the back of the net. Nonetheless, two quick goals in the 78th and 82nd minute turned this game on its head and saw the Red Devils come away with the three points.
However, the goal that began this comeback has sparked a heated debate online. Bruno Fernandes was the man who scored the equalizer past Ederson but his effort was initially ruled out as offside by the linesman.
The reason: the ball was initially passed to Rashford, who was offside. However, while the Englishman did not get a touch on the ball, he appeared to chase it down the middle before leaving it for Fernandes in the last minute.
Both sets of players swarmed the officials pleading their case but after a discussion between the referee and the linesman, the goal was given, infuriating the Manchester City players.
And De Bruyne and Co. weren't the only ones upset by this call as several fans took to Twitter in complete astonishment, arguing that it should have been offside since Rashford was in between the defender and the ball while running through on goal. Check out the incident and the best tweets below (videos are geo-restricted).

"Rashford clearly using Rule 124.3 of the offside law and shouting 'Not touching it, you can't do anything' as he was running through.

Correct decision in my opinion." pic.twitter.com/lodPY3rPOi
The intent was a pass to Rashford who was clearly offside, Rashford clearly interfered with the play, unbelievable

So apparently you can just have an offside decoy run with you the whole way The Premier League is in tatters
— Ryan (@bernardooooV3) January 14, 2023
So an offside player can run alongside the ball, drawing defenders across to him and then leave the ball to another player to score. Right ok, then…..

Rashford was active & also interfered with play from an offside position.

Top games must deliver top decisions.
Rashford was OFFSIDE pic.twitter.com/KLjgbDdMMS
That's offside. It's played to Rashford, he's about a yard away from the ball and only pulls away when he sees Fernandes about to shoot.

The rules are stupid.
But it's a good outcome for Arsenal
This Manchester derby all swings on the offside goal.
— Clive (@clivepafc) January 14, 2023
That to me is offside due to Rashford moving to the ball and shielding it slightly from the defenders
There is a technical law no doubt that protects the referee but we all saw the intent to interfere with play
An incredible turnaround at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford's goal gives #MUFC a 2-1 Manchester Derby win. But Manchester United's equaliser four-minutes earlier was highly controversial. Rashford not given offside because he didn't touch the ball and was not deemed as interfering. pic.twitter.com/ZEZB6rcpxz

Some win for United that. Casemiro so good. Not having that equaliser though, has to be offside. No chance is he not interfering with play.

What an opportunity for Arsenal tomorrow.
Yes, Rashford was shielding the ball after coming from an offside position.

The laws clearly state that the goal should not have stood pic.twitter.com/gWUWR35mgc
However, not everyone disagrees with the referee!
Rashford doesn't touch it, didn't try too or interfere with a player. 100% right

Was that goal offside or was it the correct decision to let it stand? Regardless of where you lie in this debate, Manchester United will be celebrating a brilliant, and possibly crucial victory. After starting the season with back-to-back defeats, Ten Hag's men are now only a point behind the Cityzens and six adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
This means that Sunday's North London Derby could decide whether this will be a three-way title race should the Gunners stumble or whether Arteta's men will move eight points clear at the top.
