Carabao Cup: Where to watch Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest live on February 1, 2023

January 31, 2023 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils will aim to get the job done and secure a final berth when they take on Nottingham Forest at home on Wednesday.

Manchester United will hope to make light work of their Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg encounter with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Wednesday. With a final spot in Wembley at stake, the Red Devils will aim to wrap things up as soon as possible and turn their attention to an important league fixture with Crystal Palace this weekend.

With goals from Marcus Rashford, Wout Weghorst, and Bruno Fernandes in last week's 3-0 victory, the Red Devils have a commanding lead going into the mid-week's encounter. Three days after the triumph at the City Ground, Erik ten Hag's men proceeded to register a 3-1 win over Championship side Reading in the fourth round of the FA Cup as they extended their run of scoring in successive matches to 19.

Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, will look to pull off one of the greatest comebacks in history when they travel to Old Trafford for Wednesday night's cup encounter. In the history of the League Cup, no team has ever overturned a three-goal deficit in the semi-final but the Reds will hang onto the small chance of a remontada o potentially pull off the unthinkable.

It is, without doubt, a big ask as Steve Cooper's side have largely struggled for form this term. Sitting just four points above the relegation zone in the Premier League, they have failed to win any of their last two matches across all competitions. Against Manchester United, they are yet to record a win at Old Trafford in almost 30 years. A defeat again against the Red Devils will take the away losses they have suffered to nine in succession.

Key stats for Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest

  • Nottingham Forest have lost all their last eight matches against Manchester United. They have conceeded a total of 32 goals in all.

  • Manchester United go into Wedneday's clash with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg. No team has ever been eliminated after winning the first leg of a League Cup semi-final by at least three goals (11 previous instances).

  • Manchester United have only won both legs of a League Cup semi-final tie on three occasions (out of 15 two-legged ties contested). Each time they've done so, they've gone on to lose in the final (1982/83, 1990/91 and 1993/94).

  • None of Nottingham Forest's last 16 away games in the League Cup has ended in a draw (W9 L7).

Team news: Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest

Manchester United will be without Christian Eriksen when they take on Nottingham Forest at home on Wednesday. The Danish midfielder has bee ruled out of action for three months after picking up an ankle injury during the win over Reading. He joins the likes of Donny van de Beek, Axel Tuanzebe, Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot on the sidelines.

Relatively,  Luke Shaw could be handed a role in the encounter although he will require a late assessment due to illness. There is also a boost in the squad with Ten Hag confirming that Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho could both be available for selection.

For Reading, Morgan Gibbs-White will be missing after picking up an ankle problem in the first-leg defeat to Manchester United. Moussa Niakhate, Giulian Biancone, Taiwo Awoniyi, Cheikhou Kouyate, and Omar Richards are all ruled out due to injury while Dean Henderson is still ineligible to face his parent club.
