The French star will not be part of Roberto Martínez's staff with Portugal in search for a new opportunity as a tactician.

With Gregg Berhalter seemingly not returning to coach the USMNT, a number of candidates have emerged as options to take the gig as USMNT coach, but not one of them has been more vocal about it that 1998 World Cup winner with France, Thierry Henry.

The former striker, who currently works as a pundit for CBS and Paramount+, has stated his desire to return to coaching, and thanks to his knowledge of MLS players and ideals, he believes he could be an ideal candidate for the USMNT's hot-seat.

Speaking in one of CBS' shows, Henry admitted that the desire of coaching again is there, and with Roberto Martínez leaving Belgium to coach Portugal, Arsenal's legend believes it is time to return to a dugout as head coach.

"Roberto Martínez went on to coach Portugal, and I am not going with him. Being the No.2 coach is no longer something that I would like to do. I have massive respect for the boss, he gave me an opportunity when no one else would, but I would like to have a crack again (at coaching)," Henry said.

The former footballer went on about the possibility of coaching the USMNT, the Frenchman admitted being open to all options, but before he embarks on such a big task, he would be interested to know what will the team's goals be when the big tournaments come, especially with the 2026 World Cup being hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

"Do I know (American) players? Yes, I do. Do I know the league? Yes. Would I like to be a coach at any level? Yes, of course it's something I'd love to do. But going back to the USMNT and to the country in general, you would have to ask: 'What's the plan, what's the philosophy? What do they want to be?'" Henry added.

Henry coached Monaco and CF Montreal for brief stints in-between his job as Roberto Martínez's assistant with Belgium, racking up some inconsistent results. Out of the 49 games he coached for both teams, Henry only managed to win 13 of those, with 27 losses and nine draws to complete his record.

While this option might be interesting to some, it remains to be seen if it would be the right thing to do for the American team with such a big challenge ahead and with a coach that may have a truckload of experience as a footballer, but who is yet to show that as a tactician.
