Liverpool went from celebrations to despair as they saw their 2-0 lead turn into an absolute nightmare

It was truly a night to forget for Liverpool and their fans. The Reds went from wild celebrations thanks to early goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah to put them 2-0 up inside the first 15 minutes to utter despair as Real Madrid showed why they are the team to beat in this competition by turning the match entirely on its head.

Prior to Tuesday's match, Liverpool had a long and frustrating hoodoo against Real Madrid, with zero wins from their last six meetings (D1 L5). However, Reds supporters were hopeful at seeing Jurgen Klopp's men avoid making a seventh bad result, especially considering that Real Madrid had won just one of their last seven away matches against English sides in the Champions League.

In addition, Klopp had won nine games against Spanish sides in the Champions League, and was hoping to make it ten - alongside Pep Guardiola as Liverpool sought revenge on Real Madrid for their 2022 Champions League final defeat.

Well, one thing that fans love - and sometimes hate - about football is its unpredictable nature. And Tuesday's game, from a neutral perspective provided plenty of entertainment, but certainly caused a great deal for Klopp's team and their supporters at Anfield.

Prior to Tuesday's game, Liverpool had never conceded four (or more goals) at home in a European competition. That quickly came tumbling down as Real Madrid showed their opponents absolutely no mercy, scoring seemingly at will in a match that was all one way traffic - and now leaves Liverpool facing a pretty assured "Mission Impossible" when they head to Madrid for the return leg next month.
