The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is out of contract this summer and has thus been linked with a number of clubs, sparking debate over his future.

Lionel Messi's future has been subject to speculation for the past few months. With that in mind, the attacker's close friend and former teammate Sergio Aguero has just made this topic a lot more interesting after leaking an unexpected club as a potential destination for La Pulga.

Leo has 30 goal contributions this season for PSG, scoring 16 times and assisting another 14 in his 27 outings for his current employers. However, the player's contract situation means the Argentine icon could leave Paris for free this summer.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner moved to the Parc des Princes back in 2021 on a two-year deal, with there being an option for an additional year. However, that clause must be triggered by both the club and the player, hence the dilemma.

A contract extension was thought to be a formality once the FIFA World Cup ended but the 35-year-old is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, and as a result, a few clubs are rumored to be plotting a move.

Barcelona and Inter Miami are the two obvious names. The Catalan giants bid farewell to their all-time top scorer in an unbefitting manner, hence the desire for a reunion, while Phil Neville, the head coach of the aforementioned MLS, recently admitted that his team are exploring a deal for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.

However, in an interview with UOL, Aguero let slip an unexpected name for the summer. That club is Newell's Old Boys, Messi's boyhood team which he has promised to rejoin a number of times before.

Kun, who often shared a room with Leo when the pair were on international duty, stated that a return to the Rosario club is a possibility, saying: "He is seriously considering the possibility of playing for Newell's."

Maxi Rodriguez tried to pour water over this claim, adding: "Kun is Kun. He can't keep quiet. We will see.

"It is hard to talk about this because then a giant ball of rumors is made. Let's wait and see what happens. We will not get ahead of the facts."

Was Aguero joking or is there something the Manchester City icon knows that the public is unaware of? Only time will tell as the clock continues to tick on Messi's current deal.

PSG are desperate to keep the Argentine but the cards are in Leo's hands, and with the player having flirted with the idea of moving to Newell's Old Boys and the MLS, it is difficult to rule out anything.
