After many weeks of speculation, it seems that Neymar has played his final game for PSG, and the end of his career will be as anti-climactic as most of his time with the French club has been.
Surrounded by rumors about his exit this summer, the Brazilian footballer will now be out for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury he picked up last month. While initial tests hinted that the player's recovery would only require physiotherapy, different tests by a number of doctors have revealed that the player's issues with his ankle will only be sorted out with a surgery.
Neymar's issues with this ankle started in the FIFA World Cup, following some nasty tackling by Serbia's footballers.
The press release by the club has confirmed that everything was done to avoid a surgery, but in the end, all specialists agreed to take this a step forward.
"Neymar Jr has had several episodes of right ankle instability in recent years. Following his last sprain contracted on February 20, the medical staff of Paris Saint-Germain recommended a ligament repair operation, in order to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All of the experts consulted confirmed this need," the club stated in a press release.
This news represents a blow for PSG's chances of success in the UEFA Champions League, where Les Parisiens have to overcome a one-nil score from the first leg against Bayern to make it to the last eight. With all reports pointing at Neymar's exit this summer, the Brazilian ace could have played his final match for the French club, in what would certainly become a disappointing end to his career in Ligue 1, where he failed to deliver a UEFA Champions League trophy and where he was unable to win any individual accolades, such as a Ballon D'Or.
