Liverpool dealt big blow ahead of UCL tie

Liverpool dealt double blow ahead of UCL clash against Real Madrid

March 14, 2023 By Michelle Bonsu
The Reds already have a huge mountain to climb after a massive loss in the first leg.

On Wednesday, Liverpool will need to win an unprecdented battle if they want to a spot in this year's Champions League quarter-finals.

Jurgen Klopp's side thought they had put their stamp on the match after racing into a 2-0 lead over reigning Champions League holders Real Madrid. However, Los Blancos showed why they are always tournament favorites by not only fighting back, but totally overturning the tie in a 5-2 humiliating defeat of the Reds at Anfield.

It marked the first time Liverpool had shipped five goals in European competition on home turf, and now leaves Klopp's men with a huge mountain to climb when they travel to Madrid.

To make matters worse, the Reds have been dealt two huge blows heading into this contest. Skipper Jordan Henderson has been ruled out, with his manager noting that the English star will not be making the trip to Madrid due to illness.

In addition, youngster Stefan Bajcetic, who made history back in February as the youngest ever player to start for Liverpool in a Champions League match, will not be involved in Wednesday's tie as the 18-year-old is struggling with a thigh muscle strain.

Considering Liverpool's frustrating record against Real Madrid - which has seen them fail to win their last seven meetings - these two absences certainly will not make an already tall task any easier as the Reds look to pull off what appears to be an effective "Mission Impossible" on Wednesday evening.
