Serie A: Where to watch Lazio vs Roma live on March 19, 2022

March 18, 2023 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The two Serie A rivals will lockhorms at Stadio Olimpico in a crucial test which could define the course of their respective seasons.

The highly anticipated Derby della Capitale between Lazio and Roma is set to take place on Sunday evening at the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A. The match will prove pivotal for both teams as they fight for a Champions League spot, with only two points currently separating them.

After suffering contrasting fates in their European fixtures on Thursday, Maurizio Sarri and Jose Mourinho have turned their focus to this derby clash. Although the former will not be on the touchline as a result of a ban, he will be looking to make an impact in the derby and send a message to their rivals.

Despite sharing the same stadium as their home grounds, Lazio will have the opportunity to go five points ahead of their fierce rivals if they win, making a defeat out of the question for Roma. The former are coming off a 2-1 defeat away to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night and their exit from the competition should allow them to solely focus on their domestic campaign.

Needless to say, Lazio will need to bounce back after a goalless draw against Bologna in their last Serie A match. In hindsight, the odds remain in favor of the Biancocelesti who managed to pick up all three points in the reverse fixture. Still, they will need to put in the work in order to break the streak of failing to win both derbies in a single season since 2012 and maintain their position in third place in the league table.

On the other hand, Roma are still in the race for a Champions League spot, and a win in this derby will give them a significant boost. Despite a 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday, they were able to advance into the quarter-finals.

In the league, the Giallorossi lost 4-3 at home against Sassuolo the last time out but are still a point behind fourth-placed AC Milan on the table. There is still much to do for the visitors who have managed one win and two losses in their last three Serie A outings. While their defense is among the top four in competition, they struggle with scoring goals, boasting the lowest tally out of the top seven teams.

Key stats and head-to-head record: Lazio vs Roma

  • The upcoming Derby della Capitale will mark the 180th edition of this fierce rivalry, with Roma currently leading 68-49 in the head-to-head record.

  • Lazio could complete a league double over their rivals for the first time since the 2011-12 season with another win.

  • Roma have scored in all but one of their away games in Serie A this season Lazio have scored four goals in their last five home games.

  • Roma have failed to win any of their last five away matches across all competitions, scoring just three times in the process.

  • Lazio have kept 15 clean sheets in Serie A. Only Barcelona, with 19 clean sheets in La Liga, have managed more shutouts across Europe's top five leagues.

Team news: Lazio vs Roma

There is uncertainty surrounding the availability of Lazio's Immobile for the derby, as the forward has missed the club's last three matches due to an injury. While there is hope he could play, a final decision may be made closer to the game.

Luis Alberto, who was benched for the midweek AZ fixture, is expected to return to Lazio's starting lineup. However, the Biancocelesti will be without midfielder Matias Vecino, who is suspended due to yellow card accumulation. Vecino has been a key player for Lazio this season, and his absence will be felt.

Roma, on the other hand, will be without suspended defender Marash Kumbulla. Rick Karsdorp was also forced off in the first half of Thursday's Europa League match, so Nicola Zalewski is expected to take his place at right wing-back. While Lorenzo Pellegrini is set to return to the starting lineup, Nemanja Matic is a doubt due to a knock he picked up.
